It wasn’t long ago teams — let’s face it, mostly the Knicks — were being mocked for passing on Dennis Smith Jr. in the 2017 draft.
Now, Smith has become expendable with the Mavericks. Dallas has escalated its efforts to trade the point guard amid poor offensive metrics and difficulty meshing with Rookie of the Year lock Luka Doncic, ESPN.com reports.
Smith has explosive potential, but needs the ball on his hands constantly, which clearly does not work when you have someone like Doncic on your roster.
Smith has sat out the past three games with a stated back issue, but that’s most likely due to the Mavericks being cautious as they seek his departure.
The Mavericks have talked with the point guard-needy Suns and Magic thus far, and those bottom-feeders are considered the favorites for the former North Carolina State star. The Mavericks are trying to unload Wes Matthews, who is getting paid $18.6 million in the final year of his contract, in any Smith deal.
