LaVar Ball wasn’t going to stay quiet for long.

The world’s most overbearing basketball dad has finally spoken up about a coach in the Junior Basketball Association, which he founded, physically abusing one of his players during a timeout last week.

When asked on Fox 5 DC on Wednesday about Edward Denard, who shoved and head-butted Montrell Dixson in the only incident that has given the JBA publicity, Ball suggested a double-standard: That type of thing happens within the constructs of a competitive game — but cannot be done to one of his sons.

“It’s in house. It’s in house,” he said about the league’s handling of the incident, which has come under question. “We’re gonna do what we need to do. It’s just the intensity of the game. It’s not like the guy has a bad character of beating up kids or something like that. But my sons just scored 171 points. Both of them had triple-doubles. Nobody talking about the positive. So you looking for anything negative about the JBA. … I’m not saying, ‘OK, this guy. He’s not swinging or nothing like that.’ He’s just very intense. It just happened at a bad moment. It’s part of the game. But it’s nothing like sending guys to the military at 18. You don’t think they’re cussing at those guys?”

And yet: LaVar, what would you do to Denard if he handled LiAngelo or LaMelo that way?

“I’d knock him out. How’s that?” Ball said. “Violence shall be met with violence. … Like I said, I’m not condoning this at all.”

Ball did continue to say the actions were “inappropriate,” but the damage of his bizarre comments was done.

Ball previously had ignored requests for comment on Denard’s behavior. It’s possible no comment would’ve been better after all.
