Zion Williamson knew what was coming. Still, he couldn’t believe it was real.
Shortly after being announced as the No. 1 overall pick — of the New Orleans Pelicans — and shaking commissioner Adam Silver’s hand, the Duke superstar became overwhelmed by the moment, and began crying in an emotional interview he conducted with ESPN.
“I don’t know what to say. I didn’t think I’d be in this position,” said Williamson, shaking his head. “My mom sacrificed a lot for me. I wouldn’t be here without my mom. She did everything for me. I just want to thank her.”
Williamson’s mom, Sharonda Anderson, soon joined her 18-year-old son, who she coached as a child. After so many tears of joy fell from his face, Williamson composed himself, delivering his trademark smile, and a message to Pelicans fans:
“Let’s dance.”
