The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t dimmed Daryl Morey’s hopes of the NBA completing the 2019-20 season. The Rockets general manager expects the league to not only have a postseason, but have more regular-season games as well.
“I don’t know [when], but we will be back for sure,” Morey said, according to Sports Illustrated, following a virtual watch party for the documentary “Where Amazing Happened.”
“We are prepping for playing Denver in case we go right to [the] playoffs. … I don’t think we will go right to playoffs, though.”
That echoed comments from team CEO Tad Brown, who told Ben DuBose of RocketsWire, “We’re going to get this season in.” Brown said he expected to complete the regular season as well.
Monday marked the 19th day without the NBA since it suspended its season due to the global pandemic. Several players have tested positive for coronavirus, such as Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant and Marcus Smart. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has said a return could happen by mid-May, though with social-distancing guidelines extended until the end of April and numbers of positive cases still increasing, that seems unlikely.
There has been talk this would lead the NBA Draft being moved back until August. But so far, it remains set for June 25.
