Ben Simmons’ 2022-23 season is officially over, and at this point, his future with the Nets is unclear.

Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said on Tuesday that Simmons won’t play again for the rest of the regular season or postseason.

The oft-injured 26-year-old, who hasn’t played since Feb. 15 as a result of knee and back problems, will instead start a rehab program.

At this point, doctors haven’t recommended surgery, Vaughn said.

“Our doctors and the specialists feel and think that he’ll have a full recovery,” Vaughn said, “so that starts now.”

Vaughn’s comments confirmed what appeared the most likely scenario after Simmons was diagnosed Friday with a nerve impingement in his back — in addition to the list of knee and other back problems that have derailed another season.

Simmons has appeared in just 42 of a possible 105 games since he was acquired from the 76ers via a disastrous February 2022 trade for James Harden.

The Nets will pay more than $35 million this year to Simmons, who has two years remaining on his contract, with an approximate $78 million price tag attached to his spot on the roster. In 42 games this season, he averaged 6.9 points and 26.3 minutes per game, both career-lows.

The question that looms after a second consecutive lost season, is whether Simmons’ career still can be salvaged.

Simmons’ new agent, Bernard Lee, told The Post the latest issue was part of the expected recovery process from the microdiscectomy he had on May 5 last year, and it won’t impact his ability to be ready for training camp.

“Without getting into specifics, what I’ve learned in all these conversations is that what Ben experienced here is considered to be part of the recovery from his previous procedure,” Lee said. “The NBA schedule is obviously rigorous and not forgiving to the need for patience at times and Ben made every effort to be available to help his team in every way as much as he could.

“This step at this point in time is being taken in partnership with the team to support Ben to allow him to really get himself physically prepared to begin the start of next season in an effort to lead the Nets in the way he’s shown over the course of his young career he’s capable of doing.”

Simmons parted ways recently with agent Rich Paul of Klutch.

His new agent Lee’s client list includes Jimmy Butler, Justin Holiday and Kris Dunn, and he has shown a penchant for navigating clients through tough and tricky situations. Simmons will be the latest.

Simmons was dealing with a herniated L-4 disk in his back when he underwent the May procedure, which Simmons later said would require 18 months for a full recovery.

This season, he received platelet-rich plasma injections and had his knee drained prior to the All-Star break. Simmons also missed earlier stretches of four, four and five games.

When Simmons started a strengthening program in February, shortly after the Nets returned from the All-Star break, Vaughn wanted to get him back on the court.

The capacity and role were still unknown, but Simmons would be present.

Simmons’ initial absence Feb. 24 was a late surprise.

But then that one game led to another and another and another, until he had missed 17 straight.

Still, there was a hope — slim, at best — that Simmons would return this year, especially if the Nets made the playoffs.

During what Vaughn labeled a “reassessment” phase, though, the nerve impingement was revealed, and that led to visits with specialists.

Even after the latest setback, Vaughn said the Nets aim “to be involved” with Simmons as he tries to rediscover the player he was before injuries.

“I want to coach Ben and I want to be able to push Ben to get back to all-defensive team and impact our team on both ends of the floor,” Vaughn said.

The question for the Nets between now and next season revolves around whether Simmons can get healthy, remain healthy and become both an impactful — and dependable — player.
