The Knicks announced Thursday that Tyson Chandler has a bone bruise in his left knee following an MRI exam and is listed as “day to day.”

It is excellent news for the Knicks as Chandler went down Wednesday night at Nassau Coliseum after 44 seconds in a collision with the Nets’ Gerald Wallace and left the arena on crutches. Chandler probably will sit out a few days of practice but the Knicks are hopeful he will be on the court for their season opener Thursday in Brooklyn, though it’s no guarantee.

Chandler thought he had a knee sprain, which would have been a more severe injury. Chandler said he was less concerned it was torn but his spirits were very low Wednesday night.

A Chandler injury would have been devastating since Marcus Camby, Amar’e Stoudemire and Rasheed Wallace have combined to play one game in preseason. Stoudemire is out for the opener with a ruptured cyst in his knee.
