Quentin Grimes’ absence could last just one game.
After he was held out of Wednesday’s loss to the Raptors because of a sprained right ankle, the second-year guard was upgraded to questionable for Friday night’s game against the Bulls at the Garden.
Grimes was a game-time decision on Wednesday after being listed as doubtful and went through pregame warm-ups. Coach Tom Thibodeau has said he didn’t believe it was a long-term injury.
Grimes has been a key part of the Knicks’ recent turnaround — averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and shooting 40.6 percent from 3-point range since breaking into the starting lineup Nov. 20.
Immanuel Quickley started in Grimes’ spot, scored 20 points and hit a season-high six 3-pointers in the loss.
“It’s always [tough] when someone is out, especially him. He brings a lot of defense,” Quickley said. “He’s been guarding the best player on the [other] team pretty much all season. I stepped up as best I could, tried to guard Fred [VanVleet]. But QG’s a big part of this team — he brings shooting, athleticism, defense.”
Quentin Grimes could return for the Knicks’ clash against the Bulls on Friday. APA nagging left foot injury sidelined Grimes for virtually the entire preseason and most of the first month of the regular season.
It’s no longer a small sample size for RJ Barrett. Over the past 15 games, he is shooting a shade under 46 percent from the field, making 37.5 percent of his 3-point attempts and is averaging 21.7 points and six rebounds. He has turned a corner after a rough start to the season.
“Just attacking downhill, getting to the rim,” Thibodeau said. “I think he’s starting to find a rhythm.”
The Knicks face just two teams with a winning record over their next eight games — the 76ers on Christmas and Suns on Jan. 2. The other five teams (Spurs twice) in this soft stretch are a combined 32 games under .500.
