Zion Williamson’s immediate impact has been stunning for a rookie who missed 44 games following knee surgery.
He’s not just putting up massive numbers himself – he’s making others around him better, too. Just look at Lonzo Ball.
Consider these numbers crunched by SB Nation prior to Wednesday night’s loss to the Mavericks: When the two are on the floor at the same time, the Pelicans are plus-7.3 in a 336-minute sample size. Meanwhile, when Ball is on the court without Williamson, he’s a minus-three in 1,337 minutes. Per 100 possessions, the Pelicans are 14.3 points better when the duo is out there together.
“It’s great playing with a guy like that,” Williamson said recently. “I can make cuts off the ball and sometimes break the play, but I know he’s going to see me and find me. I think it definitely opens up the game a lot for me.”
Since Williamson made his debut on Jan. 22 against the Spurs, the Pelicans are 9-9 against a difficult schedule. Williamson has been brilliant, averaging 24.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while shooting a robust 58.2 percent from the field. Ball, in his first season in New Orleans after coming over in the Anthony Davis deal, is having his best year as a pro as well, averaging 12.0 points, 7.0 assists and 6.2 rebounds, numbers that have gone up since Williamson has gotten healthy.
