The Nets switching to a five-out motion offense was more of a personnel-driven decision. And Caris LeVert was a big part of that personnel.
“It gives the guards a lot of freedom, myself and D’Angelo [Russell], to not only make the calls but get in the lane and be aggressive as well as just taking control of the offense,” LeVert said.
“Yes, our strength on the perimeter. We don’t have a real post-up guy. Even Ed [Davis] is more of a screener-type, roller-type guy,” coach Kenny Atkinson said. “We’re more of a spread so we can drive the ball better, we can get to the rim better.
“[LeVert’s emergence] was part of the personnel thing. In this offense he can even handle it more than he has. Him and D’Angelo, they have a nice synergy. The Knicks were denying D’Angelo full court and Caris just brought it up. D’Angelo was off the ball. They’re embracing that.”
Monday was the deadline to ink Russell and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson to rookie-scale extensions, but the Nets seem set to let both hit restricted free agency.
“To be honest, I don’t know nothing about that stuff. I just let my agent call me, tell me the updates,” Hollis-Jefferson said. “I’m motivated to play hard no matter what, whether they pay me or not. I’m here to win, I’m here to compete. … Basketball and wins and all that dictate how you get paid.”
As expected, the Nets exercised the 2019-20 options for LeVert ($2.6 million) and Jarrett Allen ($2.4 million).
DeMarre Carroll (ankle) and Hollis-Jefferson (adductor) both practiced Monday. Atkinson estimated that Shabazz Napier (hamstring) “did about 50 percent of practice,” while Allen Crabbe (ankle) did “just did a little bit.”
With the Nets emphasizing defense in camp in light of last season’s struggles, they’re admittedly behind on their new offense.
“It’s far from perfect. We’ve still got a ways to go,” Atkinson said.
Rodions Kurucs could find his way into the rotation.
“He definitely piqued my interest. He’s got a shot at it,” Atkinson said. “I think he’ll wind up playing for us this year at some point. Not sure when that point is.”
