The Nets’ season is over, which should give the maintenance staff at Barclays Center plenty of time to fix the rims they dented Saturday with all their missed 3-pointers.

Instead of attacking the basket to take advantage of the absence of 76ers shot-blocker Joel Embiid from the paint, the Nets tried to shoot their way to survival and wound up getting swept out of the playoffs with a 96-88 loss in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.

The Nets shied away from center Nic Claxton’s inside advantage in the second half and shot 9-for-37 on 3-pointers.

“He’s up for debate for MVP and he’s not playing,” forward Cam Johnson said of Embiid. “That’s the frustrating part about it: This is definitely one we should’ve had.”

The Nets have lost 10 straight playoff games, dating to 2021. Led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, they were swept last spring by the Celtics in the first round.

They also lost the final two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals to the Bucks in 2021.

“Getting swept is trash,” Claxton said. “It’s not a good feeling.”

After Dorian Finney-Smith got a rare 3 to drop for the Nets and tied the score at 70-70 with 9:30 to play, the 76ers went on a 19-6 run and proved that they didn’t need Embiid to dominate the glass.

Philadelphia held a 54-38 rebounding advantage that was magnified by a 15-5 differential at the offensive end.

“The only bad category was the rebounding,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said. “That was a big piece of the entire night — their ability to offensive rebound and capitalize. That makes it hard on your offense because you are playing against a set defense. We were trying to get to the rim. Give them credit for staying in front of us, though.”

The Nets shot 32.6 percent from 3-point range in the series, down from their average of 35.6 percent since the Feb. 9 trade deadline, when the nucleus of this team first came together.

Their analytics-based approach is to attempt 40 shots from behind the arc per game, but that strategy could’ve been adjusted to account for Embiid’s absence.

“Coming into the series, we really believed that was the way for us to tip the score and stay in the games,” Vaughn said. “Our chance was shoot the 3-ball. Uncharacteristically, you look across the board, across the series, we didn’t shoot to our averages.”

The 76ers outscored the Nets by 11 points in the third quarter, taking their first lead, 54-53, since the game’s first basket on a turnaround jumper by Tobias Harris, who had a game-high 25 points.

The Nets only led once — for 17 seconds in the fourth quarter — from that point forward.

Spencer Dinwiddie (20 points), Claxton (19) and Mikal Bridges (17) paced the Nets’ scoring, but it was invading 76ers fans who roared loudly as the final minute ticked away on the clock.

“My grandmother said that close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades,” Dinwiddie said. “I don’t know if anybody is in here for moral victories.”

Embiid was out for the first time in the series, though it wasn’t because of a suspension for his controversial kick to Claxton’s groin in Game 3.

It is uncertain when Embiid, who has a sprained right knee, will return, though the 76ers are headed toward a long layoff before the second round.

Without Embiid protecting the rim, Claxton scored 15 first-half points, including eight on dunks, to build a 48-40 lead.

“Finding Clax underneath, that was kind of our advantage today — and we were punishing them with that,” Johnson said. “Moving the ball, I think we got stagnant, started playing one-on-one ball, and it became harder for us to score.”

Without Embiid passing out of double-teams at the other end, the 76ers, who fell behind by 10 almost right away, had a much more difficult time getting open shots. Until the middle of the third quarter, that is.

“Forty points [allowed in the first half], we gave ourselves a chance,” Vaughn said. “Now, we couldn’t make the basketball. That’s the other side of it.”
