Kyrie Irving is considered probable for the Nets’ game against the Lakers on Thursday at Barclays Center.
After making a four-game return following a two-month stint on the bench with a shoulder impingement, Irving was sidelined, this time with hamstring tightness, for Monday’s 117-111 loss to the 76ers.
Coach Kenny Atkinson confirmed that Irving practiced with the team Wednesday.
When Irving was officially ruled out for Monday’s game, Atkinson said it was just a cautionary move. Given how Irving’s last injury snowballed from “week-to-week” to nearly two months, it’s an understandable approach.
Atkinson said he is unsure how he’ll deploy Irving, who would be making just his 16th appearance this season Thursday. When Caris LeVert, who also was sidelined for two months following thumb surgery, made his return to the lineup on Jan. 4 against the Raptors, Atkinson heavily managed his minutes.
Kyrie Irvingfor the NY POSTWith Irving’s injury history capping his minutes might be what Atkinson needs to do.
“We were just talking about [Irving’s minutes] with the performance team, we’ll talk about it,” Atkinson said. “I really have to have a long-term, smart view about this and that’s just the way we’ll approach it. That’s where we are.”
Irving is averaging 26.5 points per game with 6.9 assists.
DeAndre Jordan (dislocated finger) is questionable Thursday and Nic Claxton (left shoulder contusion) is doubtful. Neither practiced Wednesday, according to Atkinson.
“[Claxton] took a pretty hard shot on his shoulder, pretty sore today,” Atkinson said. “We’ll see what it looks like [Thursday].”
Kevin Durant took some shots at practice Wednesday, beginning to look more limber although not yet jumping.
“No update, just happy to see him out there, shooting and working,” Atkinson said.
Just five days after releasing Justin Anderson following the expiration of his 10-day deal, the Nets decided to keep him around the organization and traded for his G-League rights on Tuesday.
Anderson, who was drafted by the Mavericks with the No. 21 pick in 2015, has played in just three games for the Nets this season.
“Justin has experience, I thought he did everything we asked of him when we had him,” Atkinson said. “He understands what we’re doing, our corporate knowledge of the system really will help Long Island. It’s always nice to have experience around those young guys. Good for our continuity and good for our program that Justin is with them.”
