PHILADELPHIA — Kyrie Irving not only didn’t play in Monday’s 115-104 preseason loss to the 76ers, but didn’t even travel with the Nets despite it being his last chance to play before their regular-season opener on Oct. 19 in Milwaukee.
“We’re just trying to navigate this thing,” Steve Nash said of leaving Irving home to train. “We don’t really know what’s going to happen tomorrow. So I think really it’s … we’re just trying to take our time to figure out what everything means.
“New information seems to come in every week, and we’re just in that process of not only trying to navigate the information, the parameters, but also what’s coming down the line, how it looks and feels and what we can do to make this work and all those things. That’s all.”
With Irving refusing to adhere to New York City’s COVID-19 vaccine mandates, he can’t play at Barclays Center, meaning he could only play two of their four preseason tilts.
Irving could miss more than half the season if he’s limited to games outside of New York. As of right now, the Nets aren’t actively talking about reducing the star’s role, or whether to let him be a part-time player. But any discussions would include Kevin Durant, James Harden, general manager Sean Marks and, presumably, owner Joe Tsai.
“We have a pretty collaborative environment. I think we all weigh in and discuss it and make sure we’re making a decision that suits the group,” Nash said. “We’re so far from that right now I think we’re trying to take things day by day and try to learn as much as we can about what this looks [like]. It’s pretty unprecedented, if we have information we’ll let you know. But there’s nothing to decide on right now.”
Kyrie Irving Corey SipkinThe Nets looked disorganized in committing 26 turnovers against the Sixers. They allowed 55.9 percent shooting through three quarters, trailing 100-73 going into the fourth before the bench made a cosmetic run.
“Oh, no. We’re screwed,” Nash deadpanned. “Obviously, we didn’t play well. And it happens. Guys have been great. However many days we’ve been together they’ve been great and brought it. [Monday], sluggish, step slow, and had a poor performance.”
Paul Millsap, who’d initially been doubtful to play Monday due to health and safety protocols (contact tracing) was cleared and scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in 20 minutes of action.
“You don’t realize how much two days affect you until you get out there in the trenches,” Millsap said. “The first half, felt pretty bad. And second half, started warming up, loosened up again.”
DeAndre’ Bembry (dental procedure), Devontae Cacok (right groin soreness), Nic Claxton (illness) and LaMarcus Aldridge (rest) were all out.
Brooklyn signed Jordan Bowden and Brandon Rachal, but both are expected to be waived and end up with G-League Long Island.
Philadelphia’s Seth Curry (rest), Tobias Harris (knee), Tyrese Maxey (adductor), Shake Milton (ankle), Grant Riller (knee), Matisse Thybulle (shoulder) and Ben Simmons all sat out, but the latter showed up at the arena and took a COVID-19 test, a sign relations between he and the 76ers are thawing.
