A tanking Brooklyn team turned in a perfect performance.
The Nets rolled to the biggest blowout win in team history Sunday night, doing it with four first-round rookies on the floor, laughing their way to victory.
When it was over, Brooklyn had dominated Milwaukee 127-82 in a complete effort before 16,439 at Barclays Center.
Coach Jordi Fernández wasn’t among them, out with the flu as assistant Steve Hetzel was deputized. But an effort like this surely buoyed his spirits. Brooklyn led by 45 and held the Bucks scoreless for the final 7:04 in the best effort of the year.
“You hold any team to no points for six minutes, that’s elite,” said Noah Clowney, who had 16 points on 4-for-8 shooting from deep with two blocks. “This is the NBA. You don’t do that often to anybody.”
The 45-point margin tied a team record, as did the nine scorers in double-figures.
“That’s probably the best form of hoops when everybody eats and everybody’s playing well, everybody’s making shots,” Clowney said. “It’s just a good camaraderie.”

The Nets (7-18) now have won four of their past six games, shooting 39.1 percent from deep and averaging 116 points. Sunday was by far their best outing in this run, eviscerating the Bucks. And even though Milwaukee played without injured Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Nets will not care.
“Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Just watching how well we played as a team. Normally, Mike [Porter Jr.] has been carrying us offensively, and then you see how spread out the points are. … I don’t think anybody that stepped on the court played poorly,” Hetzel said. “It was a great feeling.”
They were led by rookies Egor Dëmin and Drake Powell, who were each chastised Friday by Fernández and responded. Dëmin had 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting with two steals and a block, while Powell added 13 points and finished plus-31.
The Nets had six players record at least plus-20 for the fourth time in franchise history and first since 2022.

By the time Danny Wolf got inside for a layup eight minutes later, the rookie had padded Brooklyn’s cushion to 45-27 with 9:15 left in the first half.
They just built on that in the second.

Powell’s three free throws pushed the lead to 114-80 with 7:16 left.
And after Jericho Sims dunked 11 seconds later, the Nets shut Milwaukee out the rest of the way. They smothered the Bucks to 0-for-9 shooting with four turnovers down the stretch of this caning.
“It’s 45 points to a team trying to lose,” Kyle Kuzma marveled. “They got four or five wins or whatever it is now. No disrespect because that’s the beauty of this league. There’s so much talent [that] if you’re not ready, you can get your butt whooped by any team.”
The Nets administered this whipping with four rookies on the floor down the stretch, much to the delight of their fans. Dëmin, Powell, Wolf and Nolan Traore had played two minutes together Nov. 18 and shared the court for much of that final six or seven minutes.
And when it was over, they doused Hetzel for his first win.
“With a big ice bath. It feels good, but it’s really — we’re all an extension of Jordi and everything that he’s done. The way they played in his absence just shows how much they care about playing for him,” said Hetzel, who was actually Fernández’s boss with the Canton Charge in 2013-14.
“It’s awesome just to be a part of this group. Jordi and I are like brothers. I view him like a brother. When he asked me to come work for him, I said absolutely. But this win is more of a reflection of everything that everybody on the staff does. And it’s fun to win. It’s fun to play well. I’m glad that we got it for Jordi.”
