Nick Nurse had just five seconds left to use a timeout, and he wasn’t going to lose it.
In retrospect, that might have been the wrong decision.
There was 3:05 left in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night and the Raptors were up by six after Kawhi Leonard scored 10 straight points. The roof was coming off Scotiabank Arena and Nurse called timeout. At the three-minute mark, he would have lost the timeout, due to the rule that teams can only use two timeouts inside the final three minutes of the fourth quarter. But with all the momentum on their side, the timeout did more bad than good for the Raptors.
“We just came across and just decided to give those guys a rest,” Nurse told reporters. “(We) just thought we could use the extra energy push.”
Things fell apart for Toronto soon after, as the Warriors saved their season with a stunning run of 3-pointers from Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson in a 106-105 victory.
“At that time, I felt that (Nurse) probably wanted to get us some rest,” Leonard said. “You never know. I mean, if we would have won that game, we wouldn’t be talking about it.”
But the Raptors didn’t win the game. And Nurse’s timeout might be one of the reasons why the momentum turned on a dime.
