Knicks rookie Obi Toppin, a Brooklyn native, can’t wait. His family has been dying to see him play as a Knick live at the Garden.
It’s going to happen later this month.
Stephen Curry and the Warriors visit the Knicks Feb. 23 in what will be a historic night as the Garden will host fans for the first time since last March.
Hours after Gov. Cuomo’s announcement that arenas will be allowed to host fans on a limited basis starting Feb. 23, the Knicks sent out a release stating it will be ready right on schedule with the Warriors’ visit, capping the amount at approximately 2,000 people.
“We all love our fans,’’ Toppin said after Knicks practice in Miami Wednesday. “We have the best fan base in the NBA. It will be amazing to have fans. But safety is first. When that time comes for fans to be there we’ll love it.’’
A Knicks official said season-ticket holders will be given top priority. The guidelines state fans must have proof of a recent COVID-19 negative test.

Health and safety remain our top priority, and we will be working closely with state and health officials to implement the strongest operating protocols. We know our fans are anxious to return and we can’t wait to see them at The Garden once again.”
Toppin’s mother, Roni, who lives in Westchester County, told The Post on Christmas that she’d work as a Garden janitor just to see her son play live for his hometown team.
According to a source, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau is anxious to have his family see him coach the team. He grew up a Knicks fan as a child in New Britain, Conn.
“I think it’s great for the league,’’ Thibodeau said. “Safety has to come first in this situation. For us, we know how important fans are to our organization. It’s something you’re hopeful it gets turned around. This appears to be a good sign. As long as it’s safe, we’re looking forward to that. The safety of the fans is most important but we know how important is to our game.
The Knicks have played before fans at Miami (on Tuesday), in Tampa, Fla., against the displaced Raptors, and at Atlanta, Cleveland and Utah. Tuesday’s game at AmericanAirlines Arena was maxed out at 1,500. The Knicks play in Washington on Friday and the Garden on Saturday against Houston. No fans will be at either contest.
“It’s not the same as a full arena obviously, but it’s still great to have fans in the building,’’ Thibodeau said of the road games. “Particularly … in Miami we saw a lot of Knicks shirts. That’s a plus. We’re looking forward to the day when the arenas are full again. It’s a start and that’s all you can ask for. But it is a lot different. I like it. They’re piping music in, piping noise, and it’s great. But there’s nothing like having fans in the building.’’
