Caris LeVert, who was traded by the Nets to the Pacers as part of the James Harden deal, will be out indefinitely after an MRI exam turned up a small mass on his left kidney.
Rarely has an NBA player had such reason to be thankful for being traded. Players generally don’t get physicals after the preseason, so this exam wouldn’t have been done if he hadn’t been dealt.
The news was first reported by The Athletic.
“On behalf of my family and myself, we want to thank the Indiana Pacers for their support and guidance,” LeVert said in a statement. “We are grateful for their extreme thoroughness during the physical process and I am looking forward to joining the team and being part of this great organization as soon as possible.”
Pacers president Kevin Pritchard said, in a statement: “We acquired Caris because of who he is as a young man first and foremost. … We will support Caris through this time and know that he will join us on the court as soon as he is able.”
Once the issue with LeVert was discovered, the Nets ended up having to send cash and an additional second-round selection (a pick from Cleveland) to the Pacers to complete the trade.
The Nets sent the Pacers $2.6 million, according to ESPN. That will count against the $5.6 million they can send out (and get back) in trades this season.
