In basketball, rehabilitation generally keeps a player off the court.

For San Quentin’s Warriors, the court is the rehab.

“Q Ball” is a moving and dynamically shot portrait of the Northern California prison’s basketball team, which is sponsored by the NBA champion Golden State Warriors. (Kevin Durant is an executive producer of this documentary, and their coaching staff comprises one of the teams that come into the prison to play.)

Director Michael Tolajian focuses on star player Harry “ATL” Smith, who dreams of playing professionally after serving his seven-year sentence.

Smith, his coach and several other team standouts discuss their pasts and how playing basketball has helped them develop skills that will translate to life on the outside.

As one San Quentin staffer puts it, “Hope is real currency inside of a prison.”
