The Raptors have their new head coach.
Toronto is hiring Grizzlies assistant Darko Rajakovic as Nick Nurse’s successor, according to ESPN.
A Serbian native, Rajakovic, 44, was a head coach in the G League and assistant with the Thunder and the Suns before joining Memphis in 2020.
Rajakovic, who also coached in Spain and Serbia, was elevated to a top assistant under Grizzlies’ head coach Taylor Jenkins.
He will become just the second European-born coach in NBA history.
“Congrats and good luck to my good friend coach (at) DRajakovic!,” tweeted former Toronto assistant and Spanish national team coach Sergio Scariolo — who was also under consideration for the job. “Good choice, it’s great to see a european coach having an opportunity to prove his value as an NBA HC! A heartfelt thank you to the Raptors, receive this consideration from what has been my team was very meaningful!”
The Raptors fired Nurse — who had been in charge since 2018-19 when he led the team to the championship — following a 41-41 regular season before getting bounced in the NBA Play-In Tournament by the Bulls.

After leading Toronto to a championship in his first season in charge, he was not able to reach those heights again after he lost superstar Kawhi Leonard, who left to join the Clippers in free agency after the title.
The Raptors reportedly underwent an exhaustive search, but Rajakovic apparently sold team president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster on his vision.
Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Bucks assistant Charles Lee were the other coaches under serious consideration, according to ESPN.

The Raptors were the last head coach opening in the league.
