Authorities say a boys basketball player at Dupree High School in South Dakota died suddenly during practice Monday evening.

The team was reportedly doing wind sprints when the student collapsed, according to Ziebach County Sheriff Gary Cudmore. Bystanders performed CPR until emergency responders arrived. There were attempts to revive the player as he was shuttled in an ambulance to Indian Health Services in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

The student’s name and cause of death were not immediately released by authorities.

“It was a tragic incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and community,” Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator Remi Bald Eagle said in a statement to the Argus Leader. “The Sheriff’s Office asks for privacy for the individuals involved to go through the grieving process.

“We are grateful for the support that the athletic community has shown for the community of Dupree and it’s really a testament to the character these programs are charged in creating in these young students.”

Calls from USA Today to Dupree superintendent Gail Swenson and athletics director Mary Farlee were not immediately returned.
