The Nets kept their starting five intact in free agency – but appear to have lost one of their best players off the bench.

Guard Spencer Dinwiddie is nearing a deal with the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN. It would likely be part of a sign and trade with the Nets.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a career renaissance during five seasons in Brooklyn and became a fan favorite. Dinwiddie played just three games last season because of a torn ACL, but averaged 14.3 points, 5.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 274 games with the Nets.

Dinwiddie was reportedly one of the Wizards’ top targets in free agency and had the backing of star Bradley Beal after the team traded Russell Westbrook to the Lakers, leaving a hole at point guard. The Nets’ limited cap space made them a long shot to retain Dinwiddie. The Knicks also had interest in him. Dinwiddie became a free agent by opting out of the final $12 million year on his contract.
