How did the Cavaliers, finding themselves in a 3-1 hole in the NBA Finals, claw back against all odds to complete an historic comeback and bring their city its first championship in 52 years?
By taking the series one game — and one puzzle piece — at a time.
At the start of the postseason, Cavaliers veteran James Jones devised a way to keep his team motivated — by bringing the Larry O’Brien Trophy to life in their own locker room.
“We needed something to bring us together,” Jones told ESPN. “Every guy was a piece. We assembled this team. So we had to assemble the puzzle.”
Jones commissioned a 16-piece puzzle replica of the championship trophy, which the Cavaliers would add to after each postseason victory. With each win, like a scene out of “Major League,” it looked more and more like the real thing. The team kept the puzzle a secret from the media until it was complete.
With the real Larry O’Brien Trophy in tow, after the Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors 93-89 in Game 7 on Sunday night, Jones and his teammates had one more to add to their collection.
As the victors doused each other in champagne in the locker room after the game, coach Tyronn Lue placed the final piece (in the shape of the state of Ohio) in its rightful spot and capped the most remarkable comeback in Finals history.
Jones, who won two NBA championships with James in Miami, knows what it takes to survive a grueling postseason and come out on top.
“Together, that’s how you win a championship,” Jones said. “Individually, we are all just a piece. Everyone had to have their role. Everyone has to have their piece.”
