The 76ers and Heat have hit peak pettiness in their first-round playoff series.
After Joel Embiid’s return sparked the 76ers to a 2-1 series lead Thursday night, the teams traded barbs over meaningless late-game layups.
The saga began in Game 2 when Heat guard Goran Dragic hit a layup with one second left — the shot clock was off — to make Miami’s win a final score of 113-103. Then on Thursday, 76ers forward Dario Saric went in for a layup with four seconds left — again, shot clock off — and Philadelphia leading 127-108, only to be blocked by Kelly Olynyk.
“I think they felt disrespected by Goran’s [layup], and we weren’t just going to let them do that,” Heat forward Justise Winslow said, per ESPN.
The 76ers, meanwhile, didn’t hide their disdain for Dragic’s late layup.
“I wish I was there in that Game 2, because I was kind of pissed about it. … I was on the sideline, really mad,” Embiid said.
It was Embiid who said he directed his teammates to try to score if they were in the same situation at the end of Game 3.
“It’s always good to blow a team out,” he said. “I think we were up 18 or 20, and if you could get that lead up to 22, I think it’s good. I love blowing teams out. I like the fact that we did that. We’re not here to make friends. We’re here to win a series.”
Embiid, who sat out the first two games of the series with an orbital fracture and concussion, helped his team get back on track as he poured in 23 points in his first game since March 28.
Before the 76ers countered Thursday, Dragic had said he didn’t care if his opponents were offended by his last-second layup, partially putting the blame back on Philadelphia.
“The first game we were down 30, and they were still running inbounds plays after timeouts with seven seconds left in the game,” Dragic said. “It’s the playoffs. I’m doing everything it takes.”
