Ben Simmons now has even more riding on Tuesday night’s NBA Draft lottery.
The former LSU star — and possible No. 1 pick in this year’s draft — was expected to sign a sneaker contract before Tuesday night’s lottery, but according to The Vertical, Simmons will wait until after the draft order is determined to make his decision in hopes that the Lakers end up with the No. 1 spot.
According to the report, Simmons and his agent, Rich Paul, weren’t satisfied with Nike’s five-year, $7.5 million offer or the one from Adidas, reportedly worth $10 million, which includes a $2 million signing bonus and a $1 million incentive bonus for being named Rookie of the Year.
Simmons would be banking on the offer being increased if he lands in the Los Angeles market, instead of Philadelphia (or Boston or Phoenix).
The risk with that strategy is the 76ers, who finished with the league’s worst record, have a 25 percent chance of winning the lottery, while the Lakers come in second at 19.9 percent.
The other issue could be Paul’s relationship with Nike. The apparel giant has as much as $1 billion invested in LeBron James, who is Paul’s backer, which may make Simmons less likely to go with Adidas.
The 6-foot-10 Simmons, 19, isn’t considered a lock to be the No. 1 selection, either. Despite a strong freshman season, Simmons couldn’t get LSU into the NCAA Tournament, and Duke’s Brandon Ingram could be selected ahead of him.
