Stephen Curry’s rise to NBA stardom apparently has rubbed some players the wrong way.
Curry has won two MVP awards, three NBA titles and has shattered almost every shooting record there is. Yet he still doesn’t get the respect he deserves.
Andre Igoudala told reporters during the NBA Finals he will “do whatever it takes to protect” Curry’s legacy, and expanded on his sentiment Tuesday during an interview with “The Breakfast Club” radio show.
“You know where I see it the most, the hate on Steph? It’s across the league, the other players,” Igoudala said. “Some of the older players [hate] that he came in and took their shine. … They hate it.”
Former Warriors teammate Matt Barnes echoed Igoudala’s comments Thursday on ESPN’s “The Jump.”
“I think he came in, he’s the golden boy,” Barnes said. “He came in and destroyed record books, won championships, beat LeBron – he’s done things that probably angered other players and fans. That’s why I don’t think he gets the respect he deserves.”
Barnes knows a thing or two about being unpopular, but for vastly different reasons. The retired 14-year veteran drew tons of scorn during his playing days as one of the league’s most notorious instigators. In addition, Barnes reportedly drove 95 miles to confront Derek Fisher after he found out the former Knicks coach was romancing his estranged wife in 2015.
Still, Barnes believes Curry was too good, too fast.
“He’s obviously the greatest shooter to ever play the game, and I can see people being bitter from that,” Barnes said. “Not to mention the whole light-skinned thing, and people have problems with that. Like I said, he’s a perfect example of what the NBA needs to be represented as, and people don’t like that either.
“Most of the time when people are so good or something’s so perfect, people don’t like that and that’s exactly what you get with Steph.”
