More money, more problems.
Zion Williamson isn’t even a pro yet and he already has issues off the court to deal with.
The former Duke star and almost-certain No. 1 pick in next Thursday’s NBA Draft is suing a Florida marketing company he initially signed with to enforce the termination of said agreement, ESPN is reporting.
The suit was filed on Thursday in North Carolina court, and according to documents, five days after he declared for the draft, Williams signed with Gina Ford and Prime Sports. The deal included a clause that the contract could not be terminated for five years. But Williamson later signed with CAA Sports and his family told Prime Sports on May 31 it was getting out of the contract, according to ESPN.
The basis of the suit is that the agreement was unlawful because Prime Sports is not certified by the National Basketball Players Association or a registered athlete agent in North Carolina or Florida. It also didn’t contain language informing Williamson was losing his college eligibility by signing.
“Prime Sports Marketing’s actions towards Mr. Williamson blatantly violated the North Carolina statute specifically designed to protect student athletes,” said Jeffrey S. Klein, Williamson’s attorney. “Mr. Williamson properly exercised his rights under the law to void his business dealings with Prime Sports Marketing. Prime Sports Marketing’s continued threats against Mr. Williamson made necessary the filing of this lawsuit.”
