The New Orleans Pelicans are going to extreme lengths to make sure Zion Williamson doesn’t get hurt again.
Williamson, the No. 1 overall pick who has yet to play as a rookie because of a torn meniscus, told ESPN on Wednesday that the Pelicans are teaching the 19-year-old how to walk and run differently to work on “the kinetic chain of his body.”
The former Duke star said he “trusts the organization” as he goes through a rehab process which has ramped up recently with individual shooting drills, but his only group participation has come without facing defenders.
ESPN reports the Pelicans would like for Williamson to go through two or three full practices before making a return, with those practices potentially coming shortly after New Year’s Day.
“He is making progress,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “He is in rehab. He is doing everything that he’s supposed to do and he’s moving forward toward playing.”
Williamson underwent surgery after tearing his meniscus in a preseason game on Oct. 13 — five days before he was scheduled to make his NBA Garden debut in a preseason finale against the Knicks.
