Jets hang onto pair of disgruntled players at quiet trade deadline

By Mark Sanchez

At the trade deadline, the Jets subtracted a player from an area of strength and kept all players from an area of discontent.

The Jets’ only move by 4 p.m. Tuesday entailed dealing defensive end Jacob Martin to the Broncos in exchange for a pick swap. The Jets will get a fourth-round pick in 2024 and will lose their 2024 fifth-round pick.

Joe Douglas did not trade Elijah Moore or Denzel Mims, talented receivers who have requested to be shipped out. The general manager did not upgrade an offensive line that has been hit hard by injuries. Douglas’ largest move actually occurred a week earlier, when he traded for running back James Robinson after Breece Hall was lost for the season.

With the apparent heavy lifting done last week, Douglas traded Martin, a rotation player who was signed to a three-year, $15.5 million pact this offseason. Martin had 1.5 sacks in eight games as part of a deep defensive end group.

Giants GM Joe Schoen didn’t want to mortgage future for overachieving team

By Paul Schwartz

The Giants did not make a move Tuesday as the NFL trade deadline came and went without any additions — or subtractions — to a team that many expected would be a bottom-feeder and, shockingly, is sitting at 6-2 as it heads into its bye week.

There were a variety of reasons why the Giants did not make a move. The players available were either not considered a big upgrade or the teams could not agree on compensation or the price tag to add the contract of the player was too high for the salary cap-challenged Giants.

Bill Kostroun/New York Post

The main reason, though, why Joe Schoen in his first season as the general manager did not do anything to fortify his first Giants roster is that he looks at the fantastic record and does not see a fantastic team. A gritty, hard working team, yes. But a roster that is not yet ready to attain what Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll want to achieve in what they anticipate to be a long stay with the franchise.

“You have to step back and honestly evaluate the roster,’’ Schoen said in his state-of-the-team media session. “You can get caught up in the ‘Hey we won the game.’ Yeah but we were also down 17-3 at some point. You got to step back and look at it for what it is.’’

Texans’ Brandin Cooks unhappy with trade deadline result: ‘Covered for the lies’

By Colin Loughran

Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks thought he would be on a new team after Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.

However, the Texans chose to not deal the 29-year-old, a decision Cooks is seemingly less than thrilled about. He took to just a few minutes after the 4 p.m. ET deadline to voice his frustration.

“Don’t take a man’s kindness for granted,” the disgruntled receiver wrote on Twitter. “Covered for the lies for too long those days are done. Crossed the line with playing with my career.”

It was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that the Texans discussed possible deals involving Cooks, but that “nothing came of it.” Cooks and his fully guaranteed salary of $18 million for the 2023 season certainly made finding a trade partner more difficult.
