The public bashing seems over. The private words are coming.
John Mara said he would have a conversation with Odell Beckham Jr., a day after the Giants owner called out the superstar wide receiver, whom he had signed to a deal worth as much as $95 million not even two months ago.
“I will [talk to Beckham] at some point,” Mara told Newsday on Wednesday at the NFL’s owners’ meetings. “I’ve had a number of those conversations with him in the past, but at some point, I’ll probably sit down with him.”
Mara had said Tuesday he had not talked to Beckham since his comments to ESPN. At issue is Beckham’s loud questioning of the Giants, from quarterback Eli Manning to coach Pat Shurmur and his own happiness in New York, which aired on ESPN two weekends ago.
“I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field,” Mara said Tuesday.
The 1-5 Giants are less circling the drain and more plunging into it, with controversies more frequent than wins this year. Mara and Beckham will have some things to talk about.
