Aaron Rodgers is firing back.
A Bleacher Report feature last week detailed the behind-the-scenes drama between the Packers’ quarterback and former coach Mike McCarthy. Rodgers was painted as a diva and a locker room cancer, having issues with McCarthy that went back to 2006. Writer Tyler Dunne’s deep dive on the subject drew the ire of the star QB.
“The thing is … it’s not a mystery, this was a smear attack by a writer trying to advance his career talking with mostly irrelevant, bitter players who all have an agenda,” he said to ESPN Milwaukee’s Wilde and Tausch on Monday.
He told the show’s host and audience that more than 100 current and former players and coaches have reached out to him since the story’s publication.
“I love Mike McCarthy. Mike has been a huge part of my success in my career,” Rodgers said, while noting he and his ex-coach dealt with their issues face to face. “We as Packer fans and Packer people, I think we need to honor Mike and respect him the right way. We had a hell of a run.
“It’s just two alpha males who are hyper-competitive and love winning and are both a little stubborn. But again, we talked through so many issues over the years, and that made us a lot stronger.”
If there are two other folks Rodgers might need to talk some things out with, it’s his former pass-catchers Greg Jennings and Jermichael Finley, who have a history of criticizing their former teammate and did so once again in Bleacher Report’s story.
“You give a guy more money, there’s more attitude, more diva-ness,” Finley said.
Don’t count on them reconciling any time soon.
“If it’s not an article about me, do you ever hear their names anywhere else?” Rodgers said. “You talk about me being sensitive and petty, at what point do you move on or stop telling the same stories?”
