The prospect of a healthy Aaron Rodgers being the Jets’ quarterback in 2024 has everyone around the team feeling optimistic.
But Rodgers thinks the organization still has work to do in building a winning culture, saying it needs to “flush the bull—t.”
“If you want to be a winning organization and put yourself in a position to win championships and be competitive, everything that you do matters,” Rodgers said Monday, the day after the Jets finished the 2023 season. “The bull—t that has nothing to do with winning needs to get out of the building. That will be the focus moving forward.”
Rodgers said the Jets’ players still need to learn how to win and part of that is taking stock of what they did this season when they finished 7-10.
“Anything that doesn’t have anything to do with winning needs to be assessed,” Rodgers said. “Anything in this building that we’re doing individually or collectively that has nothing to do with real winning needs to be assessed. Everything that we do has to have a purpose. When you step in the building, there’s intentionality with everything you do. It’s not a half-the-time thing. It’s not a sometimes thing. It’s not a most-of-the-time thing. It’s an every-time thing.”
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers speaks to reporters on Jan. 8, 2024. Bill Kostroun for the NY PostRodgers’ 2023 season ended after four plays when he ruptured his left Achilles tendon. He tried to come back for the end of the year but with the team out of contention, the decision was made to not let him play.
He was able to practice with the team over the final few weeks of the season and coach Robert Saleh said Rodgers carved up the defense as the scout-team quarterback.
“I think it was bittersweet. It’s fun to be able to go out there and practice,” Rodgers said. “Anybody that watched practice, there was excitement and also the ‘what if’ kind of hits you in the face pretty hard because if you saw what we were able to do, there are a lot of what could have beens.”
The Jets are counting on a healthy Rodgers to lead them to the playoffs in 2024.
“I think he’s going to come out with more fire,” Saleh said. “My expectation for him is just to be him. He’s 40 years old. He knows his process. He knows what’s best for him in terms of preparation both mentally and physically. I think he’s going to attack it with the same mindset he had a year ago. He’s on a mission and he’s not going to stop until his mission is complete.”
Rodgers said he feels like 2023 was a lost season for him.
“It was a really difficult year,” Rodgers said. “It kind of hit me [Sunday] night after the game just feeling like a lost year that I missed out on a lot of opportunity. Just thinking if I had been out there, things would have been a little different. It’s hard to go down that road.”
Losing football for a year has Rodgers thinking he wants to play beyond 2024.
Aaron Rodgers during a press conference on Jan. 8, 2024. Bill Kostroun for the NY Post“I was thinking when I got traded, it was going to be a one-year thing,” Rodgers said. “Then I got out here and realized how much fun I was having and kind of falling back in love with the game. And I said to you guys, this is not going to be a one-year thing, and then it gets taken away. And so this is not a one-year in my mind. I mean, obviously it’s a what-have- you-done-for-me-lately [league]. And I’m gonna have to go out and prove I can still play at a high level, but I’d like this to be more than just next year.”
Rodgers said he thinks the Jets are close to being a winner but need to add a few key players in the offseason.
“I think we need some pieces,” Rodgers said. “We had a lot of injuries up front. We have to shore up the offensive line. That’s important. We need some more receiver help probably. But I like where we’re at from a schematic standpoint and what I know I can do in the offense.”
