The Jets were dealt another crushing blow on Monday when an MRI exam revealed top offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a torn Achilles in the win over the Broncos on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the season.

Vera-Tucker suffered the injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s 31-21 Jets win.

He actually stayed in the game for one play after tearing the Achilles and then walked off the field.

The Jets had hope the injury was not serious because Vera-Tucker was able to walk.

It is the second straight year that Vera-Tucker’s season ended because of an injury.

In an odd twist, the injury happened in the same place as last year’s. Vera-Tucker tore his triceps last Oct. 23 at Empower Field in Denver.

“It’s the second year in a row,” coach Robert Saleh said. “We’re all kind of surprised because he played a play on it, he walked off on his own power, he walked to the locker room on his own power. We were pretty optimistic that that part of it was going to be OK. It’s a blow.

“I feel bad for him. He battled his way back this offseason from the injury a year ago. To have this happen again, it’s unfortunate.”

This is a massive loss up front for the Jets. Vera-Tucker has played right tackle for the past three games after beginning the year at right guard.

He is their best offensive lineman and most versatile.

He has played every line position except center since the Jets drafted him in the first round in 2021.

It takes the luster off of Sunday’s win for the Jets, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-3. It is their second Achilles injury of the season.

Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles four snaps into the season against the Bills in Week 1.

The Jets now must figure out how to replace Vera-Tucker. Saleh was not ready to reveal what they will do this week against the Eagles.

“We’ll keep that one close to the vest for the week but we have our options in-house,” Saleh said.

Max Mitchell played in Vera-Tucker’s place Sunday after the injury.

Mitchell started five games last season at tackle for the Jets and fared OK.

He was given plenty of opportunities this year in training camp to win the right tackle job, though, and struggled.

Saleh praised Mitchell’s performance Sunday.

“A year ago, I think he surprised everybody when he got in there and played at a pretty good level,” Saleh said. “I thought he did a decent job [Sunday]. Things we can improve on obviously with regards to pass protection. I thought he was really good in the run game.

“One thing Max is going to give you is he’s going to give you everything he’s got. He strains as well as anybody. He’s somebody that we have full faith in.”

Another option is Billy Turner, who played some left tackle on Sunday when Mekhi Becton briefly left the game.

Turner is a veteran but he also had a rough time in training camp and the preseason.

Rookie Carter Warren is eligible to come off of injured reserve but he missed OTAs and most of training camp with knee and shoulder injuries. Saleh said he’s “got a long way to go.”

Things could get more interesting after the bye week on Oct. 22.

Duane Brown, who began the year as the Jets starting left tackle, can come off of IR for the Oct. 29 game against the Giants.

But would the Jets move a 17-year veteran to right tackle when he has always played left?

Would they move Becton back to right tackle after he has played well on the left side for the past three weeks?

“We’ll see. We’ll take it week-to-week,” Saleh said. “[Brown is] eligible to come off IR following the bye week so he could be eligible to play the Giants after the bye week. We’ll talk about that once we cross that bridge.”
