Emily Wilkinson was anxious about getting involved with a “punk football star,” but Baker Mayfield was up to the challenge.

“I was assuming he’d be the typical playboy athlete,” the Nebraska native said of her now-husband to ESPN.

Mayfield, 24, who was first introduced to Wilkinson, 28, by a mutual friend in 2017, worked overtime to grab her attention, which included following and unfollowing her on social media. She agreed to a date before the 2018 Rose Bowl, which would be Mayfield’s last game suiting up as an Oklahoma Sooner.

Following the loss, in which Georgia topped Oklahoma, 54-48, Mayfield decided to remain in LA, where he would move in with Wilkinson and her siblings days later.

The couple continued to fuel romance rumors over the next few months, before announcing their engagement in July 2018.

“Can’t wait to do life with the most perfect girl. Emily Wilkinson, I love you,” Mayfield wrote on Instagram at the time.

Fast-forward a year later, Mayfield and Wilkinson became husband and wife in a scenic Malibu, California, ceremony, which took place earlier this month.

“The Mayfields… Last week was a real life dream. Unbelievable day surrounded by family and friends. Excited to start the next chapter of our journey together @ewilkinson, love you Em Lou,” the second-year quarterback gushed on Instagram.

With training camp on the horizon, Mayfield is enjoying some downtime with his new bride, honeymooning in a tropical locale.
