The Bears messed up their two-minute drill in quite a creative fashion.

After driving into field goal range toward the end of the first half against the 49ers, the Bears were getting ready to kick what would have been a 47-yard field goal when the chance was taken away from them at Soldier Field on Sunday. T

That’s because Trenton Gill, the punter, took an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for bringing a towel onto the field to dry the spot on the grass where they planned to kick the field goal.

That is, it seems, illegal, and the Bears were penalized 15 yards as a result, taking them out of field goal range.

The half ended with the Bears being shut out, down 7-0, after they punted.

The turf at Soldier Field wasn’t in good shape, as there was a pregame drainage issue amid rain in Chicago. Though the standing water was cleared away for the game, conditions are still less than ideal.

The timing is notable as it relates to the Bears’ efforts to build a covered stadium in Arlington Heights, a suburb of the city. This is unlikely to help the case that they should stay at Soldier Field, which is located more centrally within Chicago.
