Chase Claypool’s time with the Bears sounds like it might be over.

General manager Ryan Poles spoke of Claypool’s future on ESPN 1000 in Chicago before Thursday’s game against the Commanders, and in his answer, all signs seemed to point to a split between the organization and wide receiver.

Claypool was listed as inactive for Thursday’s game in Washington.

“You’re always disappointed in this situation and it’s definitely something I take ownership of,” Poles said during the interview before his Bears picked up their first win of the season with a 40-20 blowout win over the Commanders in Landover, Md.

“Last year in the situation we were in, we wanted to add another receiver to the offense, not only to help us be more productive but also to help Justin take the next step. The right thought process was there and I feel comfortable with that.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t work out and we were hoping for him to be a little bit more productive and be someone that could help us take it to the next level.

“I wish him luck.”

The Bears picked up Claypool for a second-round pick in a deal with the Steelers last November, and the trade has failed to pan out the way the Chicago organization had hoped for.

In seven games last season with the Bears, Claypool had just 14 receptions for 140 yards without a touchdown.

This year, Claypool has been a healthy inactive for two consecutive weeks, and has expressed his unhappiness with his usage.

And in the three games he appeared in, Claypool had just four receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown.

Before the trade, the 25-year-old had recorded two 850-plus-yard seasons in Pittsburgh in 2020 and 2021.

The impending breakup between the two sides has been no surprise, as the Bears asked him to not attend the two games he has been inactive for, according to NBC Sports.

The team previously had said he would not be at the facility leading up to Thursday’s game.
