Former Chicago Bears star Dan Hampton had a massive jug of cheap red wine in his truck when was busted on drunken driving charges last month, court documents show.
Hampton, an ex-defensive lineman elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002, had a blood alcohol level of .189 – more than double the legal limit — at a hospital after being pulled over on Nov. 20 in Winfield, Indiana, the Post-Tribune reported Monday.
Hampton, 64, of Winfield, told cops he had five beers at a friend’s house. One officer then found a reusable cup filled with red liquid in his truck and a 128-ounce jug of Carlo Rossi wine that was three-quarters full, according to court documents obtained by the outlet.
“That’s really high,” Hampton said of his BAC before an officer took him to jail, charging documents show.
Hampton — a four-time Pro Bowler nicknamed “Danimal” for his aggressive defensive style — was later charged with three misdemeanor counts related to operating while intoxicated. He has been released from custody after posting bond and is due back in court on Jan. 25.

An attorney for Hampton, who was key member of the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl-winning squad, declined to comment Monday, the Post-Tribune reported.
The arrest marked the latest legal woes for the gridiron legend, who co-hosts a Bears postgame radio show on Chicago’s WGN-AM. In 2002, just days before being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Hampton was busted for DWI in Arkansas. He was later sentenced to one week in jail, CNN reported.
Hampton had also been arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated in 1996 and 1997, the network reported.
