Things appeared to go off the rails early on Sunday for the Chicago Bears.

During the first half of the game against the Minnesota Vikings, Bears center Sam Mustipher snapped the ball into quarterback Justin Fields’ chest as the latter was calling an audible. Fortunately for the Bears, Fields fell on the ball and retained possession, but they went three-and-out and punted the ball away.

The botched snap came after the Bears took a delay of game penalty on their first offensive play of the game.

It certainly seemed to be one thing after another for the Bears’ offense, which entered Week 5 averaging 16 points per game, ranking among one of the lowest totals in the league.

While it looked as if that trend would continue Sunday, Fields and the Bears put together a quick touchdown drive to cut Minnesota’s lead to 21-10, which would hold as the score at halftime.

Although the Bears continued to put points on the board in the second half — nine in the third quarter, and three in the fourth — it wasn’t enough to top the Vikings, who came away with a 29-22 victory.

Despite the loss, Sunday’s game could serve as an optimistic sign for the Bears’ offense, which only scored 12 points last week in a loss to the Giants, turning the ball over three times.

The Bears will host the Commanders this week on “Thursday Night Football.”
