The Bengals and Chiefs are set for an AFC Championship game rematch on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs seemed to have a Super Bowl trip in hand a year ago, leading the Bengals by 18 in the first half before Joe Burrow led a spirited Bengals comeback in a 27-24 overtime win.

Patrick Mahomes’ health is the big question ahead of the game after the MVP frontrunner suffered a high ankle sprain in Kansas City’s divisional round win over Jacksonville.

The Bengals, meanwhile, are coming off a dominant 27-10 win over the Bills to earn their spot in this AFC title game.

Referee Ron Torbert explains bizarre third down replay

By Ethan Sears

We have an explanation for the extra down given to the Chiefs during the fourth quarter of their AFC title game victory.

Though that particular drive ended with a punt, the extra play -- which allowed the Chiefs to convert a third down via penalty -- was extremely bizarre, and seemed in the moment to come as a result of the clock not being wound correctly.

"On the previous play, there was an incomplete pass," referee Ron Torbert told a pool reporter. "We spotted the ball, but the line judge came in and re-spotted the ball because the spot was off. We reset the play clock and the game clock started running. It should not have started running because there was an incomplete pass on the previous play.

"The field judge noticed that the game clock was running. He was coming in to shut the play down so that we could get the clock fixed but nobody heard him, and the play was run. After the play was over, he came in and we discussed that he was trying to shut the play down before the ball had been snapped. So, we reset the game clock back to where it was before that snap and replayed third down."

Torbert added that the crew followed the regular protocol for such a situation.

Travis Kelce says Cincinnati was better "when Jerry Springer was the mayor"

By Ethan Sears

Travis Kelce isn't done ripping Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval just yet.

"Cincinnati was a better city when Jerry Springer was the mayor," Kelce said after the AFC title game.

The Chiefs -- and particularly Kelce -- took exceptions to a video Pureval made this week in which he said Joe Burrow was Patrick Mahomes' father and referenced "Burrowhead Stadium." Kelce took a shot at the mayor immediately after the game, then followed up by comparing his mayoralty to that of Springer, the eventual daytime talk show host.

Referees missed holding call on key play

By Ethan Sears

Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson was held on the play that led to the game-winning field goal, as Orlando Brown Jr. had his hand wrapped around Hendrickson's upper body to keep him from getting to Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback scrambled and was hit out of bounds, with the ensuing 15-yard penalty setting up the game-winning field goal. If the holding on Brown had been called, it might have changed the game's outcome.

Travis Kelce flames Cincinnati mayor during trophy ceremony

By Ethan Sears

Travis Kelce took some of the talk this week personally.

The Chiefs tight end called out Cincinnati mayor Aftab Pureval during the Lamar Hunt Trophy ceremony after Pureval made a video joking about Joe Burrow being Patrick Mahomes' father and a reference to 'Burrowhead Stadium.'

"I got some words for the Cincinnati mayor: Know your role and shut your mouth," Kelce said, calling Pureval a "jabroni."

Empire State Building lights up red for Chiefs after Eagles debacle

By Ethan Sears

The Empire State Building has spent the night getting dragged on social media after lighting up green for the Eagles. Now, at least the New York City sky won't be lit up green. The building changed to red to honor the Chiefs after they secured a 23-20 victory for the AFC title.

That hurt us more than it hurt you.

Travis Kelce: "Burrowhead, my ass"

By Ethan Sears

Travis Kelce crashed Patrick Mahomes' on-field interview with a message for Bengals fans who tried to turn Arrowhead Stadium into their house.

"Burrowhead, my ass. This is Mahomes' house," Kelce said.

After the Chiefs beat the Bengals in the AFC title game, it's tough to argue with that.

Chiefs win AFC title after late hit on Mahomes sets up game-winning field goal

By Ethan Sears

After a bizarre half of officiating, there will be no controversy about the biggest call of the game.

Cincinnati linebacker Joseph Ossai's late hit on Patrick Mahomes put the Chiefs in position to take a 23-20 lead on a 45-yard field goal, with Harrison Butker hitting the kick. It's the worst possible way to end the season for the Bengals, who fail to repeat their feat from last season when they won the AFC title at Arrowhead. For Mahomes, who finishes the game 29-of-43 with 326 yards and two touchdowns, it will be his second career Super Bowl appearance, as the Chiefs will face the Eagles in two weeks.

The Chiefs won in a classic, their first victory over the Bengals in four tries since last season, as Mahomes and Burrow are putting together a defining AFC rivalry for this era.

Ossai, who appeared hurt on the play, was in tears on the bench afterwards. The Arrowhead Stadium crowd was in elation. And the Chiefs were a step away from immortality.

Chiefs defense stops Burrow, Mahomes will get the ball back

By Ethan Sears

Chris Jones has given the Chiefs fits all night, and came up with a massive sack on third-and-8 to give the ball back to Patrick Mahomes. After the Bengals converted a third-and-16 to Hayden Hurst, it looked like they had momentum, but their drive stalled after that.

Now, after Sky Moore's punt return to the KC 47-yard line, Patrick Mahomes will get the ball in his hands with 30 seconds to go in regulation and one timeout.

Chiefs punt on fourth-and-8 instead of kicking 56-yard field goal

By Ethan Sears

This decision could be dissected for a long time if the Chiefs go on to lose. Facing fourth-and-8 at the Cincinnati 37-yard line and 2:30 left, Andy Reid opted to punt.

A field goal from there would have been 56 yards, or Reid could have put the ball in Patrick Mahomes' hands, as Mahomes has been on all night. Instead, Joe Burrow has it with the chance to take the lead.

Jaylen Williams intercepts Joe Burrow

By Ethan Sears

Another huge potential swing in this game as Joe Burrow was intercepted by Jaylen Williams on a deep ball to Tee Higgins. Bryan Cook tipped the pass to Higgins and Williams came up with the interception to set up the Chiefs with a potential go-ahead drive.

Chiefs convert on extra down after penalty

By Ethan Sears

Here's a blast from the past: A fifth down in the state of Missouri.

The Chiefs got an extra down after failing to convert on third down because the clock wasn't reset. Then Patrick Mahomes was sacked on the replay of third down, but the Chiefs got a first down thanks to a defensive holding.

Unlike the first instance back in 1990, when Colorado beat Missouri in college football, the extra down didn't affect the game, as the drive quickly stalled out after that.

Bengals tie the game after fourth down conversion sets up touchdown

By Ethan Sears

Facing fourth-and-six at the Kansas City 41, Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase came up with the play of the game so far. Burrow went deep to Chase in double coverage, and the receiver came up with a highlight-reel catch.

From there, all it took was a short pass to Joe Mixon and a two-yard run from Samaje Perine to punch it in and tie the game up at 20. The scoring drive of 45 yards followed Patrick Mahomes' fumble near midfield. With 13:30 to go, it's anyone's game.
