The Chiefs’ residence in the Super Bowl has been cut short.
The Bengals went into Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, fell behind by 18 points and then stormed back to beat the Chiefs in overtime of the AFC Championship to punch their ticket to the franchise’s first Super Bowl since 1989.
Rookie Evan McPherson won it for Cincinnati, nailing a 31-yard field goal in extra time shortly after Vonn Bell intercepted Patrick Mahomes just 14 seconds into overtime. The Chiefs had won the OT coin toss — as they had a week before in their epic win over the Bills — but the Bengals defense came through yet again to rob Kansas City of a third straight trip to the Super Bowl.
Joe Burrow, who completed 23 of 38 passes for 250 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and made key plays with his legs when under pressure, engineered the game-winning drive to send the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI, where they will face either the Rams or 49ers.

AP“If you would have told me before the season that we’d be going to the Super Bowl, I probably would have called you crazy,” Burrow said. “But then we played a whole season and nothing surprises me now.”
After nearly coughing up the end of the second half as badly as they did the first half, the Chiefs salvaged a 44-yard field goal by Harrison Butker as time expired to tie the game 24-24, sending it to overtime. It snapped a stretch of 21 unanswered points by the Bengals, the last of which came on a 52-yard field goal by McPherson to put Cincinnati up 24-21 with 6:04 left in regulation.
Joe Burrow and the Bengals beat the Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC Championship game to reach Super Bowl 2022. USA TODAY SportsBut it could have been much more for the Chiefs. They had first-and-goal from the 5 with 1:28 left in regulation and the Bengals had just spent their second timeout. After a 1-yard run, though, Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard sacked Mahomes on back-to-back plays to force the Chiefs to kick the field goal.
It was the second time Sunday the Chiefs wasted a prime chance to score a touchdown at the end of a half. Up 21-10 late in the first half, the Chiefs got the ball with 61 seconds left. Mahomes led them down the field, helped by a defensive pass interference by ex-Giant Eli Apple that put the ball at the 1-yard line with nine seconds left. But the half ended when Apple tackled Tyreek Hill on a screen pass, denying him the end zone and a potential knockout punch by the Chiefs, who were out of timeouts but tried one more play with five seconds remaining.
“When our defense makes that play and we’re down 11 … we knew that we were going to be able to go win that game,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said.

They forced the Chiefs’ first two punts of the day on their first two drives of the third quarter, and the Bengals’ offense answered the second with a 31-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 21-13.
Former Giants defensive lineman B.J. Hill then came through with a huge play, tipping a Mahomes pass and catching it himself for the interception. Five plays later, Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase for a 2-yard touchdown. The Bengals converted the two-point conversion to tie the game 21-21 with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Bengals’ comeback mirrored the one they pulled off in Week 17 against the Chiefs, when they faced the same 11-point halftime deficit before winning on a McPherson field goal as time expired.
On Sunday, they made Mahomes mortal after halftime. He completed 18 of 21 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the first half before going 8-for-18 for 55 yards and two interceptions in the second half and overtime.
“We’re going to the Super Bowl and it sounds crazy to say that,” said Hubbard, a Cincinnati native. “It’s hard to believe. We’re here. I love this team, I love this city and we got one more to get it all.”
