A few days after emerging as a potential Jets head-coaching candidate, Bill Cowher said he doesn’t plan on throwing his hat in the ring.

“I have no interest in coaching,” the Hall of Famer told ESPN in a report published Sunday. “I have too much respect for the coaching profession to talk about a job that isn’t open. From that perspective, any job that is open, I have no interest in coaching.”

While it is uncommon for coaches to publicly campaign for a job that isn’t open, Boomer Esiason hinted last week that his CBS colleague could make a run at the Jets this offseason.

The 0-13 Jets are expected to fire head coach Adam Gase once the season ends.

“He’s the one that told me the Jets job is going to be really attractive, and they could hire whomever they want,” Esiason said on WFAN of Cowher, who hasn’t coached since 2006, following a 15-year stint with the Steelers. “He told me he loves [GM] Joe Douglas.”

Esiason also said Cowher’s wife was a big Jets fan and that the 63-year-old was watching highlights of his coaching days.

“Is he sending a message? I’ve worked with him for 14 years, and I’ve never seen that,” Esiason said.

Cowher was linked to the Jets in 2009 before they hired Rex Ryan and was also a candidate for the Dolphins’ job three years later. He won a Super Bowl with Pittsburgh to cap the 2005 season.
