New year, new heartache inflicted on the Bears by Mitchell Trubisky.

Sure, it’s only preseason and the results don’t matter, but it cannot be easy for Bears fans — or players, coaches and front-office executives, for that matter — to watch Trubisky succeed against Chicago after he flopped in four years as their starting quarterback.

Making a preseason start Saturday for the Bills, Trubisky led the Bills to 13 first-quarter points and 34 first-half points. Trubisky led the Bears to 13 first-quarter points only twice in 50 career starts for the Bears.

The Bills sat starting quarterback Josh Allen while the Bears played their starting defense as a tune-up. And Trubisky’s first four offensive drives all resulted in touchdowns, sounding alarm bells.

Trubisky, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Bears (ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson), is Allen’s primary backup. He was 29-21 as the Bears starter and made a Pro Bowl in 2018 before losing his job to Nick Foles last season.

Foles has been bumped to No. 3 on the Bears depth chart, behind veteran Andy Dalton and rookie Justin Fields.
