With the first round of interviews complete, The Post breaks down the candidates for the Giants’ head-coaching position:
Steve Spagnuolo
Giants defensive coordinator and interim head coach
Strengths: Well-respected and popular in the building, a loyal employee who helped win a Super Bowl with his 2007 defense.
Weaknesses: Would represent something of a status quo move; did not distinguish himself in his four-game stint after replacing Ben McAdoo.
Matt Patricia
Patriots defensive coordinator
Strengths:
Is extremely smart — heck,
— and always has his defense prepared and hard to score against despite what at times is suspect talent.
Weaknesses: Bushy beard, caveman look might not be CEO-like; can he command the whole room and be the face of the franchise?
Josh McDaniels
Patriots offensive coordinator
Strengths: Sure, he has Tom Brady, but his schemes are chameleon-like in their diversity and he does have previous head-coaching experience.
Weaknesses: Rubbed plenty of people the wrong way in Denver and did not win much with the Broncos. Can he thrive without Tom Brady?
Pat Shurmur
Vikings offensive coordinator
Strengths: Have you seen Case Keenum play this season? Would be a strong mentor for a young quarterback.
Weaknesses: Not the most dynamic of personalities and did not win much as head coach in Cleveland. Of course, who does?
Steve Wilks
Panthers defensive coordinator
Strength: Tough disciplinarian yet is considered a players’ coach and worked with Giants GM Dave Gettleman in Carolina; as assistant head coach has addressed the entire team.
Weaknesses: Never been an NFL coach and only one year of experience as an NFL coordinator.
Eric Studesville
Former Broncos running backs coach and assistant head coach
Strengths: Giants know him well as their running backs coach from 2001-03. Detailed and a good communicator.
Weaknesses: Never been a coordinator at the NFL level and has not been on a head coaching track.
