Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid pleaded guilty last week to felony driving while intoxicated, stemming from a 2021 crash that resulted in 5-year-old Ariel Young suffering a traumatic brain injury.
Reid, who initially faced up to seven years in prison, now faces a possible sentence of only up to four years in prison, according to the Associated Press. The 37-year-old son of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid entered his plea in Jackson County Circuit Court in Kansas City, and his sentencing is set for Oct. 28.
Tom Porto, an attorney representing the Young family, said they are “outraged” over the deal.
“The five victims of this crime are outraged the prosecuting attorney is not seeking maximum sentence allowable by law,” Porto said. “The defendant is a prior offender whose actions caused a 5-year-old girl to be in a coma and seriously injured three others.”
Reid had been scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 26. The former coach was accused of driving 84 mph while intoxicated when his Dodge Ram pickup truck crashed into two vehicles near Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs, on Feb. 4, 2021.
“I really regret what I did,” Reid said, acknowledging that he was drinking on the night of the crash. “I made a huge mistake. I apologize to the family. I didn’t mean to hurt anyone.”
