The Jets were missing the man in the middle of their defense in a 24-3 win over the Patriots on Thursday night as linebacker C.J. Mosley was ruled out of the game with a toe injury.
Mosley has been a fixture in the Jets defense for the past four seasons and is the play caller for the defense who wears the speaker in his helmet to get the calls from the coaches.
Mosley injured his toe early in Sunday’s win over the Titans and left the game.
He did not practice this week and was listed as questionable on the injury report.
Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley (57) during practice. Bill Kostroun/New York PostJets coach Robert Saleh said Mosley underwent a pregame workout to see if he could play, but it was determined he could not.
Mosley told ESPN he sprained his right big toe. The good news is it is not turf toe or a broken bone. The Jets now have some time off before facing the Broncos on Sept. 29, so Mosley has time to heal.
Jamien Sherwood started in place of Mosley.
The Jets suffered another injury to a starter Thursday night.
RT Morgan Moses went down with a knee injury late in the third quarter and did not return.
Saleh said Moses would undergo tests Friday to determine the severity of the injury.

There were a few instances when it appeared Jets QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Garrett Wilson were not on the same page.
The two did connect for a touchdown in the third quarter, but there were several other times when their timing looked off.
“I’ve gotta get on my details, make sure that I’m ready, figure it out,” Wilson said.
Rodgers said the first three Jets opponents have focused on taking Wilson away, and that has created a challenge for them getting him the ball.
The Patriots had top cornerback Christian Gonzalez shadowing him for most of the game.
Wilson finished with five catches for 33 yards.
The Jets signed DT Jalyn Holmes to the active roster before Thursday’s game and elevated LB Marcelino McCrary-Ball from the practice squad.
They officially put Johnson on injured reserve.
Besides Mosley, the other inactives were OT Max Mitchell, OT Carter Warren, RB Israel Abanikanda, DE Eric Watts and CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse.
