All eyes have been on Eagles Carson Wentz since Philadelphia shockingly selected quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of NFL Draft 2020.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since the draft, Wentz, the Eagles’ current starting quarterback, stated on a conference call Monday that he was unbothered by the team’s decision to bring in another high-profile signal-caller.

The injury riddled 27-year-old Wentz said he understood there was a possibility the Eagles could draft a quarterback.

“It didn’t really concern me,” Wentz said. “I had a feeling we could draft somebody based on how our roster is laid out, wanting to get younger.”

But the Eagles also could have gotten younger by selecting a player of a different position, like many expected they would, as quarterback is the least of the title contenders’ problems.

Wentz said he is “excited to add” the 21-year-old Hurts, who spent three seasons at Alabama and lost the starting job to Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphins’ No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft.

Hurts then played this past season at Oklahoma, which he helped lead to the College Football Playoff semifinal.

“Heard nothing but great things about Jalen, the kid he is and the player he is,” Wentz said. “I got a chance to talk to him just briefly. Create a really good, healthy, competitive challenging environment.”

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo speculated recently the Eagles could use Hurts as a running back.

Monday also was the first time Wentz was speaking to the media since he exited in the first quarter of the NFC Wild Card loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a head injury.

“I can confirm I had a concussion and I was dealing with symptoms,” he said. “It was scary stuff. You only get one of these brains and you have to protect it.”

In April 2019, the Eagles exercised the fifth-year option on Wentz’s contract. The following month, Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million contract extension with $107 million guaranteed. Wentz is now under contract through the 2024 season.

Wentz, Philadelphia’s second-overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, became the first quarterback in Eagles history to pass for at least 4,000 yards when he accumulated 4,039 yards last season. In four seasons with Philadelphia, Wentz has thrown for 14,191 yards and 97 touchdowns in 56 games. His stretches of stardom have been stalled by injuries, including a torn ACL in 2017, when he was in the running to win MVP.

On the conference call, Wentz was asked about the prospect of sharing the field with Hurts. Wentz said he would do “whatever’s going to help us win.”

“If I was to start questioning [General Manager] Howie [Roseman] now, I’d be questioning myself,” he said. “I know how important the quarterback position is and the dynamic is for me and other guys in that room.”
