Washington defensive end Chase Young was helped off the field during the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers after suffering a potentially season-ending knee injury and refusing to get on a cart.

Young waved the cart off and instead walked into the locker room with the help of trainers. The team quickly announced the 22-year-old has been ruled out for the rest of the game. NFL Network reported that Washington fears Young tore his ACL.

Washington is all but officially out of the playoff race at 2-6, but a Young injury would be devastating nonetheless. The 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year is a franchise cornerstone. Though he hasn’t made quite the same impact this year as in 2020, the long-term outlook hasn’t changed.

Young was engaged with Donovan Smith on the play, but the injury appeared to come out of nowhere, and he went down in a heap.

Washington led Tampa 13-3 when the injury occurred.
