MIAMI — You wouldn’t blame Chiefs running back Damien Williams if he’s felt like gloating this week.
Williams, who played for the Dolphins from 2014 (when they signed him as an undrafted free agent) until 2017 (after which they opted not to offer him a new contract), is having the time of his life in Kansas City.
Williams, who rushed for more yards and touchdowns this season (498 and five) than he did in four years with the Dolphins (477 and three), has been getting some closure this week. Not only is he playing a Super Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium, the Dolphins’ home stadium, but the Chiefs are practicing at the Dolphins training facility.
“I’m kind of glad we’re practicing in the Dolphins facility, because I can get it all out early — being back home, being in stadium I used to play in,’’ Williams said Wednesday. “I’m able to kind of get those emotions out early so that when I do get to the stadium [for the Super Bowl], where it all started for me, all the emotions will kind of be gone and the reminiscing will be gone.’’
Damien WilliamsGetty ImagesWilliams, 27, has become a key cog in the Chiefs offense, leading it in rushing. He credited his time with the Dolphins for helping him mature — despite the disappointment of not being offered a new contract after 2017.
“It hurt,” Williams said. “I take those days and put them in a box and moving forward, kept playing hard. Sometimes I open that box up. When I went [to Miami,] I was a young kid coming out of college. Everything is timing. It wasn’t my time. I was just here playing football. Being a young kid, and [leaving Miami forced me] to grow up a little bit.”
Williams has been a factor in the Chiefs’ postseason run, catching seven passes for 65 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 92 rushing yards and three TDs on 29 carries. In the past four games, he’s scored eight TDs on 71 touches (56 rushes and 14 receptions).
“Damien has matured over the past two years tremendously,’’ Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “His knowledge of the game has grown, and he has a unique skill set. He’s been blessed with a tremendous amount of speed, and great vision. He’s a tremendous football player who happens to play the running back position. The guy can catch. He can run it and he can block.”
