MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Talk about a homecoming.
Chiefs running back Damien Williams, who spent the first four years of his career with the Dolphins, returned to South Florida and scored the game-winning touchdown in Super Bowl 2020 in his old home stadium.
With 2:44 left to play in the game, Williams caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes and barely got the ball into the end zone to give the Chiefs a 24-20 lead on the way to their first Super Bowl title in 50 years.
“It’s crazy,” Williams said. “You spend your first four years here, undrafted. I built a lot of relationships here and still have a lot of relationships here. It’s a great organization. They have a great fanbase. Being able to go to a place like the Kingdom, it doesn’t feel real yet. When you enter the league, you think about the Super Bowl. You think about what you can do. For it to be where I started my career undrafted, it means a lot.”
The touchdown capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive by the Chiefs, whose offense was stagnant for much of the night. The referees took a long look at the touchdown on replay because it appeared as if Williams may not have gotten the ball over the goal line before stepping out of bounds. The touchdown stood, though, as the replay showed him just getting over the plane.
Damien WilliamsEPAWilliams put the punctuation mark on the win with a 38-yard touchdown with 1:12 left in the game to seal the 31-20 win for the Chiefs.
Williams was a key player for the Chiefs all night. He had 17 rushes for 104 yards and a touchdown and four catches for 29 yards, including the game-winning score.
“He runs so angry,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “He gives our offense its edge. I think a lot of people don’t realize it until he gets the ball in his hands. We believe in him a lot. He’s the attitude on offense. He looks forward to these big moments.”
The 27-year-old spoke all week about how emotional he would be in his return to Miami. He played for the Dolphins from 2014-17. Miami let him leave as a free agent after the 2017 season and he signed with the Chiefs.
He had 498 rushing yards and five touchdowns this season, both career highs.
Not only did Williams return to Hard Rock Stadium this week, the Chiefs practiced at the Dolphins’ training center.
“I came in with a chip in 2014 and it hasn’t gone anywhere, and it’s not,” he said.
