KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The announcement came on the scoreboard with just under two minutes remaining in Sunday’s AFC Divisional playoff game between the Chiefs and the Texans — Arrowhead Stadium was out of fireworks.
The Chiefs had scored so much in the 51-31 win over Houston, that the celebratory fireworks fired off after every score had been used so much that their supply was out.
Call it the Patrick Mahomes effect.
The Chiefs dynamic third-year quarterback rallied his team from a 24-0 deficit with four touchdown passes in the second quarter and five total in the game to push the Chiefs back into the AFC Championship game where they will play the Titans next Sunday. He led the Chiefs on seven consecutive touchdown drives and eight consecutive scoring drives to crush the Texans’ dreams.
“Obviously, we didn’t want to be in that spot,” Mahomes said of the big hole early. “The biggest thing I was preaching to the team was let’s go do something special. Everybody’s already counting us out. Let’s just go play by play and just put our best effort out there.”

Travis Kelce and Demarcus Robinson both dropped third-down passes from him in the first quarter. The Texans scored two touchdowns off of special teams errors by the Chiefs and one on a busted coverage.
Momentum swung the Chiefs’ direction in the second quarter when Mahomes got going. His four touchdown passes in the final 10 minutes of the second quarter made him the second player in postseason history to have four scoring passes in one quarter, joining Doug Williams of the Redskins, who did it in Super Bowl XXII.
The Chiefs chipped away at the Houston lead with quick drives and took a 28-24 lead at halftime. They continued to pour it on in the second half, scoring 41 unanswered points.
“Anytime that I’m and this team are on the football field, we’re going to fight until the end,” Mahomes said. “We don’t care what the score is. If we’re down 24 or up 24, we’re going to put in our best effort every single play. I think that’s the mentality of this team.”
Mahomes final stat line was 23 of 35 passing for 321 yards with five touchdowns for a 134.6 passer rating. He also led the Chiefs with 53 rushing yards on seven carries. Mahomes is the first player in NFL history with at least 300 yards passing, at least five touchdown passes and at least 50 yards rushing in a playoff game.
Now, he gets a chance to try to erase the bad taste from losing last year’s AFC Championship game to the Patriots in overtime here. The Chiefs lost to the Titans in the regular season, so they know what they are facing.
“We’re going in with the mentality of not coming up short. We’ve played the Titans,” Mahomes said. “They’re a great football team. We know it’s going to be a great challenge.”
