Andy Reid knew what he was doing when he let defensive back Justin Reid kick an extra point during a preseason game.

It took just one quarter of the regular season for the unorthodox emergency kicker setup to pay dividends.

After kicker Harrison Butker was carted off the field with an ankle injury, Reid was forced to take an extra point against the Cardinals on Sunday. Not only did he nail it, but he boomed the ensuing kickoff out of the back of the end zone.

Reid later missed an extra point after the Chiefs’ third score of the game.

Butker returned to the game at the end of the first half, drilling a 54-yard field goal in his first kick back.

During training camp, a video made the rounds of Reid hitting a 65-yard field goal in practice, and told reporters he was comfortable kicking from around 45 yards in a real game.

It looks now like he may get the chance to try — and at least so far, it looks like that wasn’t just talk.
