The crowd at Arrowhead Stadium fittingly was chanting “13 seconds” at the end of the first half of the AFC Championship game on Sunday, but this time, the Chiefs could not score.

With their lead cut to 21-10 after the Bengals scored a touchdown with 1:05 remaining in the second quarter, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense advanced the ball to the Cincinnati 15-yard line with 13 seconds to go. It fittingly was the same time it took Kansas City to move 44 yards to get in position for a game-tying field goal at the end of regulation before defeating the Bills in overtime.

An ensuing pass interference call Sunday in the end zone by former Giants cornerback Eli Apple gave the Chiefs first-and-goal from the 1-yard line with nine seconds to go.

But Mahomes’ subsequent pass into the end zone fell incomplete and Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill was stopped short of the goal line by Apple on a short second-down completion as time expired.

Mahomes finished the first half with 220 passing yards and three touchdowns to Hill, Travis Kelce and Mecole Hardman.
